End of Summer

It seems way too soon for the kids to be heading back to school.  It also doesn't sound right to hear about Labor Day sales on the television and radio.  How can the summer be coming to an end so soon?

The college grandchildren have started to leave for their schools.  They rest will depart throughout the week.  Some of the younger grandchildren have started back to school this week and the remainder will go back next week.  I'll miss having them around and stopping in all the time.  However, it was a great summer.

I had some fun fall sewing to do before school started.  A friend of mine is a teacher.  To encourage creative writing with her students, she uses a book titled Letters From Felix.  She has used a pathetic looking "Felix" stuffed rabbit that gets to go home with the children.  I promised her that I would make a new one for her before classes started.

Felix may have overeaten this summer so he may need to go on a diet this fall, but he is definitely an improvement over the one that was being used.  lol

He even has his own backpack for the start of school (and for carrying his notepad and pencil).

One of the granddaughters stopped over this past week because she wanted to "make a dress".  This was her first dressmaking attempt and I think she did a great job on it.  She loved it and can't wait to come home for Thanksgiving so she can sew some more.

I managed to get my Scrappy Radiant Star quilted.  I'm looking forward to getting the binding on it and having it finished.

It was my block choice for my month of the Gridster Bee.  Each of my beemates included an extra block so the construction of the quilt went quickly.  They were all stars in my book and I included their signature blocks in stars on the back.

Lastly, this week has seen excitement with several of our tortoise eggs hatching.  It's always a fun time to watch the progress.

  1. So much goodness here, but please don't say 'end of summer' just yet! We still have tomatoes to be harvested as soon as they ripen, not to mention all the winter squash! At least two more months of sunny, warm skies please. Love the new Felix!

  2. I have never seen a tortoise shell hatch, how exciting. It is always sad to see Summer end, but of course (as I might have mentioned before) if it ends up there, that must mean warmer weather will soon be enjoyed here. =) Your granddaughter's dress is fabulous. It is amazing really being her first attempt a sewing a dress. Love those little signed Gridster Bee blocks on the back of the quilt. This quilt is lovely. As for Felix, how adorable is he with that fun backpack on his back in readiness for school, children and fun. You did a fabulous job in stitching him, Mary.

Your granddaughter did an amazing job on her dress. I guess the stitchy gene runs in the family.

I love the colors in your gridster quilt and how special to have everyone's name in a block.

That bunny is precious! Looking forward to teaching grandkids to sew--will be years yet as #1 (boy) is not quite 2 and #2 (girl) will arrive in late October. 17. School started here between August 1st and 7th, depending on whether you were county or city schools. Gracious! Felix is precious -- you did a great job! Your granddaughter is absolutely beautiful and her dress is terrific! I love the signature star blocks on the back of your quilt -- that looks so good! How fun you get to watch turtles hatch! Our box turtles bury their eggs and so we don't know they've hatched until we see teeny-tiny baby turtles moving around! :)

  18. I ADORE your Felix! There is nothing wrong with overeating a bit during summer. I love his chubby round tum :) That is the cutest backpack I have ever seen!! The dress looks wonderful on your granddaughter. That reminded of spending time with my grandmother. The Scrappy Radiant Star quilt is looking fabulous. I wonder what binding you will use. I had a lot of fun watching the hatching on Instagram. Next year you should do a video :)

Always a pleasure reading your posts!

  19. (How did I miss this post?)
I love peeking in to your life and all that goes one with you: sewing, hatching baby tortoise chicks, making stuffed rabbits for friends; the list goes on and on with all the good you do for the world. Can't believe that summer's ending, but I won't miss the heat! Thanks for sharing pictures of your fabulous Gridsters quilt--and happy to know that we are stars in your book!
