Life Continues to be .....

.... a lesson in learning.   I entered another year of this learning business this week and it has been remarkable what I continue to learn.  Lesson # 6,000,000,000 or so is that Scrub*bing Bubbles bathroom cleaner does not make a good substitute for hairspray.  Duh!   It amazes me what I will do when I am not paying attention.  My advice is to NOT give it a try.

All in all, it has been a terrific birthday week with kids and grandkids popping in and out as well as many friends and family sending good wishes.  I am so blessed.

We spent the weekend with our son and DIL who live a couple of hours away.  They live in the wine country so it is always fun to see the wonderful fall colors in the vineyards at this time of the year.  Harvest is well under way and we watched one truck delivering the picked grapes for processing.   Machinery always fascinates me so I was intrigued at all of the workings there.  Our son works in the industry so it was great to get the inside story about how this all becomes wine in the end.

There is a large migratory area near them for the Monarch butterflies.  They tend to arrive around this time so many are being spotted around town.

My creative side has been busy this week with Halloween.  Have you ever made a football costume?  I'll share a picture when I get the little one in it.  I hope it works as planned.

I finally finished the stitching for the Christmas stocking.  All I have left now is to make it into the stocking.  One down and one to go before Christmas.

Have you ever given thought to how many scissors you own?  Thearica asked that question on her blog.  I remember my mother hiding her sewing scissors from us when we were growing up.  My dad did a lot of traveling and he would bring her the beautiful Swiss and German scissors.  Now I understand why she hid them!!  I have scissors EVERYWHERE and decided to get a rough estimate.

Kitchen and office scissors.

Kid's scissors.

Pinking shears, embroidery, dress shears, buttonhole scissors and all else found in my sewing area.

That is a total of 45 and I didn't count the thread nippers or the ones in the garage.  LOL

Go ahead.....I dare you to count how many you have.  Once you do, post a picture of them and you could win a nice pair of Gingher scissors on Thearica's blog sponsored by Ken's Sewing Center

  3. I had to laugh at your new "hair spray" as I did the same thing once with Horse ligament. It was under the bathroom sink cause my hubby swears by it for muscle aches. Well, it is the same color and size of my hairspray refill bottle. I refilled my hairspray bottle and sprayed away. Yikes, what a shock that was. Had to reshower! At least yours must have smelled pretty!!!

  7. Mary, Mary, Mary... You surely do win the prize. lol

What would we do without our tools?

I have a hairspray story too... My 1st cousin chased me all over the house when we were teenagers and once he caught me he sprayed my hair full of deodorant!! He was a meanie! We were close, as most of all of us cousins were so we laughed about it... Years later we were celebrating our granny Ida's 90th birthday... I had a dishpan full of tomato peelings and was taking them to throw in the trash can. he was sitting by the other cousins talking and I walked right up in front of him and tipped the dishpan towards him. he looked up at me and I said "Remember the deodorant in my hair"... he had this absolute look of fear on his face when he thought he was about to get a lap full of tomato juice. lol

of course, I was a good girl and walked on with my dishpan full of junk... But I should have! ha!

  13. You are too funny :) I have a friend who recently soaked her contacts in hydrogen peroxide instead of solution, and then proceeded to put one in her eye the next morning. Much more of a lesson than yours! (she was OK) And I think you win the prize for most scissors.

  14. OMG - I've certainly done something similar here and there - and been too embarrassed to admit it! Way to go, Mary! You've shown us it's OK to laugh at ourselves! I have to ask, though - how did it hold your hair (you don't have to answer) - lol!
    Cheers!

  18. Happy Birthday! I shall try not to use your hair spray method! :o) Since I'm left handed I need true left handed scissors. Those aren't as easy to find so honestly, I have few pairs of scissors. Happy Halloween costume making.

  27. OH my - I want to have just as many scissors as you do when I grow up! :)

Does your son work for Gallo? My brother used to intern for that company.

And you must just be able to cross-stitch with lightning speed!!! Beautiful finish, and congrats!

  28. My mom threatened to shave our head if we used her good scissors. I've also tried scrubbing bubbles as hairspray. Doesn't hold very well but gives it a nice foamy finish. :)

  30. Happy Belated Birthday. I always love reading your posts as I think God passed out about a million bushels more of energy to you than to the rest of us.

I know I don't have that many scissors, but I do have a wide variety of scissors--what quilter doesn't?

Loved your bubbles/hairspray story, and had fun reading other people's stories, too. Sorry you had to redo your hair that day!

Again, happy birthday to a lovely quilter!
