Elephants and Giraffes, Oh My

Several years ago I participated in the Elephants on Parade QAL and made the cute quilt for our last grandchild.  The quilt was so much fun to make and made me a follower of Sew Fresh Quilts.  Lorna has another really cute pattern called Giraffes in a Row.  With another new grandbaby due any day now, I made the giraffes to go along with the elephants.

Giraffe by giraffe, this quilt came together quickly.  With each new giraffe, I was certain that one was my favorite.

I even added a purple polka dot one to the back because they were so much fun.  I still think my favorite is orange.  Which one is yours?

My giraffes were helped along with fabric from Wendy.  I recently won a flat rate box full of solids from Wendy.  I had been really struggling with finding the "right" green and the perfect one was found in the box she sent.  How much fabric do you think one can fit into a flat rate box?  Just look at this.  I think if I travel again I want Wendy to pack my suitcases for me.

My Temperature Quilt continues to grow.  Sadly, I had to go back to the green this week when our low one night dropped down to 39*.  I thought we were done with that stuff.

Ramona is also doing a Temperature quilt.  Her blocks are a great combination of colors - a mix between my sister in Alaska and mine in California.

We've had several birthdays in the family this week.  It's always fun to join in the celebrations.

This is a special time of the year when the little ones make their First Communions.  We have two grandchildren making theirs in the next few weeks, including this one.  The veil that she will wear is the one that her mom wore, and that I wore, when we made our First Communions.  Like me, it is officially an antique!!  How quickly the years pass!

We've been battling the Influenza B in the family this week.  It has not been fun.  I'm ready for flu season to be over.

Have a great weekend.

  1. I’m sorry you’ve had the flu at your house. Healing prayers going up for you all. Your giraffe quilt is just too cute. I have a sister in law who loves giraffes. I may have to make thatnfor her. Thanks for the mention in your post. I was working on my blocks tonight and have February all sewn! Onto March and April! How wonderful that your grand daughters are wearing your communion veil. Enjoy the day.

  2. So sorry you've been hit by the flu. I hope everyone is well very soon, and able to participate in your beautiful granddaughter's first communion. How special that she gets to wear grandma's veil. Those giraffe's individually are cute, but the group in a row on that baby quilt just sings a family welcome lullaby to the new baby. I love Lorna's animal designs too, though sadly have yet to make any of them. Someday soon ...

  3. I hope you soon feel 100% better and same for your family. Flu has been terrible this season. Never fun. I love your giraffe parade quilt. Adorable. Fun pictures of the kids too! First communions are special, but what a treasure to have 3 generations wear the same veil.

  10. Sorry to hear the flu has hit your house--just when you were getting up and going again. But it looks like you are still going, with making that really cute set of giraffes/baby quilt. So darling. Darling also describes the young girl in her veil--such a beautiful sight! Enjoy that special day.

  17. It seems very wrong for the flu to still be hanging around in mid-April! I heart giraffe. With the single giraffe on the back the quilt is totally reversible too! Adorable. Stay warm. Be well.

  20. What a cute quilt. Love the confetti squares you added and the stripe binding is wonderful. You comment about green in your temperature quilt made me laugh. Since I like colder/cooler temperature, I rather have some blue in mine. Happy Birthday to everyone! I just got over a horrible flu, wishing you speedy recovery.

  21. I remember your adorable Elephant quilt! (was it called Elephants on Parade?) And these giraffe's are just as adorable. I think I am partial to the ones with the longest necks! It looks like they are all pieced too...right? Your granddaughter's 1st communion veil reminds me of one Irene is wearing in an old photo I have taken in the 1950's of a group of young ladies during a feast to the Virgin of Guadalupe.....I'll show that to you one of these days! Speaking of days......today is the day.....my retirement day! woohoo!

  22. I love the teal giraffe. Bummer on the flu bug - we too were hit by half the house. Knocking on wood the rest don't get it. Hope it clears quickly and you don't come down with it. Lovely picks of the grands.

  24. I do hope the flu bug has flown from your home by now. Your Grands are precious and what a wonderful heirloom veil you have each worn. Super fun giraffes on the very cute quilt. Happy Spring...<3

  28. I am making this giraffe quilt now. The pattern is smaller than I like my baby quilts to be. I was going to put a regular border or two on it and then I saw yours. It is awesome! What a cool idea. I was wondering if you would care if I used your idea for my quilt? You know they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. 😊

  29. Is it possible to get this pattern? If so I would like it mailed to me as my printer is broken. Thanks so much.
