End of Summer

It's hard to believe summer is over.  The last of the grandchildren return to school tomorrow.  Where did it go?

We've had grandchildren for the last few weeks so there has not been a lot of sewing going on here.  We have had lots of fun water time in spite of an exceptionally cool August.  My August month in my Temperature Quilt looks pretty boring.  The month started out warm and then the coastal fog rolled in ..... for weeks.  We are in for a few days of warmer temps this week.

September is often our warmest month as the Santa Ana winds descend upon us so look forward to seeing some reds next month.

In spite of the cooler temps, the little ones enjoyed some lots of water time.

They had to share the water slide with the tortoise (bottom left) who insisted on climbing right in the middle of their fun.

We had a lot of fun with art supplies - including decorating ourselves in some cases......ahhh...two year olds!

I had the urge to stitch once everyone was back home.  I should have been cleaning the house, but I quietly slipped into my quiet sewing space and added a few blocks to my selvage project.  These are so quick and perfect for satisfying that sewing itch.

Somehow, my selvage stash seems to be getting bigger!  They were all nicely packed down and now they are all fluffed up and twice as big.  Hmmmm.....that wasn't the plan.

I've seen so many fun pincushions on IG this month and really NEED to make a few more.  Of course, I have the perfect excuse with the annual Perfectly Pleasing Pincushion Parade starting next week.  There are lots of great prizes so be sure to check it out HERE.

The garden has done so well this summer - finally.  Right now we are enjoying the tomatoes, beans and zucchini.  Tomato canning went on over the weekend by my husband - his first canning experience.  He did a great job too.  Do you think I can pass it on to him now????  lol

  1. How wonderful that you're able to spend so much time with your grandchildren!! I really like your pincushion. It's such a pleasure to enjoy the bounty from our gardens - kudos to your hubby for trying his hand at canning and kudos to you for letting him. :)

  2. Thanks for sharing your summer fun :) My husband sometimes helps with canning but I usually let him off the hook because he does almost all the weeding!!

Hope you get to sew some red into your temp chart..
It's more fun sewing than cleaning. Blocks look great.

  4. It's lovely to see what you have been up to - it sounds like things have been busy at your place and oh what fun!! I love your selvedge blocks - funny how the scraps grow isn't it?! And interesting to see your temperature 'gauge' - like how you're doing it in flying geese...this could be a fun project for me for next year!

  5. I'd pass it on. That way you'll have more time to sew. [Good luck with that]
Looks like a lot of fun was had by the grandkids. Gotta love little artists.

  7. This summer has flown way too quickly. I need to end my 'break' and get back to sewing and blogging.

The kids are just too cute. I'm happy everyone had a great time.

The veges look wonderful, especially those beans.

  10. (no need to write back, since we've been writing back...)

Just wanted to tell you a funny story about the "misplaced" art work. My niece put up a picture of this sort of artwork in her house: circles around all the doorknobs, plugs and in spaces behind the lamps. She had washable markers to deal with but all I could think of was: what a lot of cleaning up work! Your temperature quilt is looking really great--hopefully this week you should get some extremes for your colors. Yesterday was 112, but today we are a balmy 107. HA!

  12. I can't see why anyone would want to do housework when there is sewing to do! I don't think there is anything quite as enjoyable as a water slide for the children although it can wreak havoc on the lawn! ...and Wow...that tortoise is a big guy! Thanks so much for blogging about the Parade....am looking forward to seeing your post!

  13. August came and went all too quickly for my likes. September and back to school (August here for snow days ahead) always means fresh new Crayola crayons. Family fun and lovely pool. Your little two year old was merely emulating tattoos she has probably seen on adults. Sewing over house cleaning is quite acceptable to me. Good for hubby canning. Pincushion fun ahead...<3

  14. How cool to spend time with the grands. August was warm, the pool was used quite a bit. But now it is much cooler, think it is time to figure out how to close the pool. I know a 4 year old that draws on himself too. Nice the hubby took over canning. Jeff and I used to do it together. Love your selvage blocks.

  15. Your grand babies are too cute! It is so strange here in Texas with the temps running in the 60s during the morning & mid 80s the rest of the day. Hadn't seen this kind of weather in twenty or so years!
