Lighting

As I mentioned in my last post, my blogging buddy, Soma, is doing a monthly series on photography.  If you have ever viewed her photos you would know how much I love seeing her posts.  This month her challenge was about lighting.  I decided to give it a try with my sewing projects this week.

First off is my word for the Spelling Bee that I have joined this year.  I am the bee queen for March and the words I am going for are sewing related.  First off is my "scissors" photographed in a bright, but shady area.

The next one is the same shot, but taken in bright sunlight at about 2 p.m.  The colors are much truer in the second photo.

Next up are a couple of mug rugs that I made for some friends who joined me for some sewing yesterday.  Both of the photos were taken in the morning light - one in bright sunshine...

....and the other in the filtered light from a patio cover.  The colors in the second one are much truer, but the quilting shows up better in the bright light.

Lastly, it is that time of the year for the kid's school auction.  As I have done for many years, I made a school uniform.  This photo was taken in filtered light....

....and this one was taken inside with a flash.  The detail is much better with the flash as are the colors.

Of course, I am using a point and shoot camera.  I am sure that the results would be much better with a better camera.  Then again....I am so grateful to have a camera where the results can be seen immediately.  Does anyone else remember when we used to have to wait a week for our film to be developed?

I am thoroughly looking forward to the year ahead with all of Soma's great hints.

In other happenings this week... I made a batch of my favorite OATMEAL cookies for the Super Bowl party.  They would have been great had I remembered to put the oatmeal in them!!!  Talk about a big mess.  Trying to clean that cookie sheet was a nightmare.  Would one not think if you were making oatmeal cookies you would remember to add the oatmeal??  Sometimes I worry about myself.

January's Block Lotto block was Birds in the Air and guess who was one of the winners.  These are the blocks that have arrived so far and I cannot tell you how beautifully made these have been.  I think I am going to have to become a BLUE person.  This month the block is Snail's Trail with browns - a color more in my comfort zone.

We've been enjoying summer here for the last week and forecast for another 4-5 days.  Of course I am loving the temps in the upper 80s each day, but it would be so nice to get some of that El Nino rain that they promised us this year.  Now they are saying that they will come in March.  After being told they would be here in January, then February I am beginning to wonder.

  1. Your birds in air blocks are gorgeous. Congrats on winning. My sister once mistook the bin my mom kept her salt in as the sugar bin and made cookies. NOT GOOD! but funny. Sorry about your oatmeal cookies. Thanks for sharing the photograph hints link

  2. I love the idea of sewing related words for your spelling bee quilt. How fun. And yes I remember the days of getting film developed. I take way more photos now. Love digital.

  3. Hmm, kind of like making the cornbread without the baking powder! Definitely not edible but the birds enjoyed it. Enjoy your warmth, we would love some of that this weekend, high of 1 degree forecast on Saturday. Your camera is the opposite of mine, all my pics are better without flash!

  7. It sounds and looks like you're learning a lot in the photography sessions. I always have a hard time taking a decent photo. I love home-made oatmeal cookies. Yours look delicious, even without the oatmeal.

  8. Thank you so much for linking up, Mary! I love that you are playing with the lighting, I really liked seeing the photos taken in two different lights. Love that blue and the text fabrics on your spelling bee block and that is a lovely shade of red on the hot pads. Congratulations on your win! You were probably too excited about the superbowl, that's why you forgot the oatmeal :)

Lastly, you will not believe it, but I woke up this morning thinking about making a set of doll clothes for my doll and I was thinking about how great your doll clothes are!! Then I come to your blog and I see doll clothes!! How wonderful!

  9. Congratulations on your block winnings! They look great together. The photography class you are taking sounds interesting...that is one area I have such hard time wrapping my head around some of the explanations. Your cookies still look good :) Not too long ago I accidentally put twice as much shortening in chocolate chip cookies...yuck!

  10. I'm going to check out the photo hints. Lighting is very tricky, isn't it? My favorite cookies are oatmeal raisin. Just in case you want to try oatmeal cookies again and bring some along if you come to QuiltCon. :)

  12. You're too cute about the forgotten oatmeal. I've done similar and the grands will demurely ask if I forgot the butter. True story!

  14. It is always so interesting to see how much color and detail changes with lighting. You made an excellent study Mary. The scissors block is really cool!
I remember when we had to mail off our film and were lucky to get back the photos in a few weeks.
You made me laugh over the oatmeal free oatmeal cookies. I guess you could use them as crumble toppins. I've done similar things myself, LOL.
Is the school uniform doll sized? It's awfully cute!
How fun to win those birds in the air blocks!

  15. Kids today don't know anything thing that isn't immediate gratification. I think they're also born with a techo gene. LOL I remember the film developing waiting and snail mail, life before computers, cars before locking and unlocking with a key fob and having to roll the windows up and down by hand. Tough life we had. LOL! My Dad will be 97 and I think of all of the technology changes he's see in his life. Love the scissors word and that little plaid uniform is THE cutest!!

  16. The blocks are gorgeous love the way they look. Your pictures look good. I play a wee bit with my point and shoot. Was contemplating the time when you used to have to take the roll of film into the local store, fill out the envelope and wait for a week or so to get your pictures back. Remember the little drive up huts where you used to drop your film. Photomat or something like that?

  17. Taking photos with a digital camera is total bliss as opposed to the former film cameras. I never worry about taking too many shots or having to delete them when the pictures don't come out well. I love how you have shown your photo lighting variations. I actually bought a "light box" for taking photos but never set it up because it would require me to clear off some horizontal surface. Lovely quilt blocks. Too funny about missing the oatmeal in your cookies. Now you can make another batch...oh darn. We are supposed to get a little rain Thursday. I shall include your area in my rain dancing. Embracing Creative Bliss...

  18. Thank goodness I'm not the only one! I made pumpkin cookies without the pumpkin once--sigh. :)

  19. A couple of years ago I joined iPhone photography online workshop. I learned a lot from that workshop. I only use iPhone to take all my photos now. Easy and quick for me. I like your hearts and scissors photos. Well done Mary - Hugs Nat

  20. Love those scissors, you are quite serious about your cutting,eh? Great study on the lighting with your projects, that uniform is adorable!

  21. Your scissors word is terrific, along with those fabulous tailor's shears--where ever did you get a pair of those? I love all your sewing projects, from blocks to a sweet little uniform to your other accomplishments. You are amazing.

  22. I like how you showed the different pics in a variety of lighting. I'm always surprised when I think the lighting is perfect and then the photo looks off in color. I literally laughed out loud about leaving the oatmeal out of the cookies. My family had a big laugh (and still does) about the time I left tuna out of the tuna casserole. :O)
