Atlanta Continued

My all time favorite book and movie has to be Gone With the Wind.  I am one of those "Windies" apparently.  What better place than Atlanta to revisit the wonderful memories of the book.

Our walk started off when we asked the doorman at the hotel how far away the Botanical Gardens were.  He told us it was "just over a mile".  I had looked at the map and it looked further than that, but off we went.  After we had walked the first mile we stopped for lunch at the Georgian Terrace Hotel where the cast of GWTW stayed when they held the premiere of the movie.  It was delightful.  We asked there how much further the Margaret Mitchell museum house was.  ( I had figured we could stop there as it looked about halfway to the gardens.)  We were told it was "about a mile."  Hmm...interesting.

We walked the ten blocks and took a break while we toured the museum and Margaret Mitchell's apartment.  I really refrained myself from buying a mug.  How many mugs can I really use?

As we were leaving, we again asked how far it was to the gardens.  Again...."about a mile"!!!!!  I am now beginning to think that it must be the standard line in Atlanta.  So we walked, and walked, and walked.  According to the GPS on our phone we arrived at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens 4.2 miles from the hotel.  Mind you, if we had good walking shoes on it would have been no problem, but we did not.  We then WALKED for another hour through the gardens.  They were absolutely breathtaking and worth every moment.

Gorgeous hand blown glass light fixture in the entry.

I wanted to bring this guy home for my own garden.  LOVED him.

Lily pad pond.

What was interesting about this pot was......

this little guy sitting quietly on the leaf.

This was the vegetable garden. Notice the glass tomatoes hanging around the top.

What a wonderful pumpkin patch!

Beautiful glass pumpkins spilling out of a huge cornucopia.

I mean REALLY big!!!!  It was the size of my kitchen.

A wall of herb garden.

I love seeing the apple tree trellised like this.

An orchid inside the greenhouse.

Tree roots hanging down in the rain forest.

Hand blown glass in the fountain.  Isn't it pretty?

I thought this glass apple tree would look good in my yard too.

There was a Scarecrow in the Garden event going on which included over 100 scarecrows handcrafted by different businesses, individuals, schools and organizations in the Atlanta area.  Some of them were so clever, but I have included just a few of them.

On the way out there was a gift shop where they had the glass fruits and vegetables for sale.  I was thinking about how cute it would be to have a few in the garden.  When I saw the price of one pumpkin I thought better.  It was $1200!!!!  That cornucopia was suddenly much more impressive.  Since my glass gazing ball was just used as a throwing ball by one very cute grandson, I could picture what could happen to a very expensive pumpkin or apple.  No thanks.

Needless to say....we did not walk back.  We called a cab and it was worth every penny.

  13. I remember the day I went to see Gone With The Wind at the cinema when it was re-released back in the 70's...oh my, I fell hard for Rhett Butler:-) That's too funny about those people telling you it was "just a mile" to the gardens. It reminds me of the first time I went to visit my two older brothers in Vancouver, BC...Claude lived near the border and I had asked him how long it took to get there and he said "oh about 15 minutes" so I headed off for a walk. Well...over 1 1/2 hour later I got to the border...ends up he meant it would take 15 minutes by CAR!! lol

That garden looks simply amazing and I really love the glass ornaments. Ouch on the price though! lol I'd love to go to Atlanta one day, it looks to be a wonderful place to visit. xoxo

  14. Wow! I know you had a great time in Atlanta! You captured the Botanical Gardens perfectly! A great place to visit! I love GWTW best also. I have read the book three times over the years. It intrigues me every time I read it, and they captured it very well in the movie, altho books always give you more than the movies can portray.
I am finally getting the giveaway on my blog if you want to come over and visit.

  27. Yikes NM, that was one long walk! Don't blame you a bit for taking a cab back to your hotel! That happened to us in Miami last year, we kept walking and walking and finally got to our destination but decided a cab back was in order. :o)

That garden is amazingly beautiful!! The pumpkins and especially that glass in the foyer are just gorgeous! No, they wouldn't last long around here either. Probably one of the horses would step on them or Mr. D would get his hands on it! ha! Ya gotta love 'em!

The boys are going back to the stable on Friday or Saturday. I am right down in the pits. Each year it gets harder to send them back even though I know they are well taken care of and I go see them often. I will miss riding out back especially with the new road to go on. Oh well, when it is -20* I will be glad I don't have to plow through the snow to get down to the barn.

We had a great Halloween party Saturday night. or I guess I should say the kids did as they did most of the work. I posted about it this morning. They have the perfect huge back yard to do things like that. Some lawn and some of it wooded. It was just a great time.

Mom and Dad leave on Monday. We are getting things packed up to mail ahead. My sister was here for the weekend and she got a lot done for Mom too. With them gone and the boys gone it's going to be very lonely around here! :o( And quiet!

Well my cleaning gal is coming so I am going to take off and do some errands. She doesn't like me under foot when she is doing floors. I wish I could have her for things other then bathrooms and floors but she is very busy so I take what I can get.

Glad you had such a great time in Atlanta! Love to you both! xoxox
